Sustainable Shopping Starts with Swapping: Join the Movement!

The Green School’s committee have truly been working hard these past few weeks, as they do every year to make an impactful initiative come alive.
Recently, the school's Green School Committee organised a clothes swap event, encouraging students and staff to exchange gently used clothing
instead of turning to fast fashion. The initiative not only helped reduce waste but also fostered a sense of community, all while promoting eco-friendly
fashion choices. Here's a look at how the event unfolded and its positive impact on both the environment and the School community.

Sustainable shopping is crucial for reducing the environmental and social impacts of the fashion industry. The fashion sector is the second-largest polluter globally, contributing to 10% of carbon emissions and producing 92 million tons of waste each year, much of which ends up in landfills. Additionally, fast fashion often exploits low-wage workers, with many earning as little as $3 per day under unsafe conditions. Sustainable Development Goal 12 aims to promote responsible consumption and production, reducing waste and improving resource efficiency, this was the main focus over the past few months. We as a school committee all believed it was far better to shop sustainably as it would reduce the impact fast fashion has, socially and environmentally. So, our genius Green School’s committee came up with a brilliant idea.

The committee worked hard to build excitement for the event, making announcements and encouraging students to donate gently used clothes in exchange for raffle tickets, which could be used to "purchase" clothes. Those without donations could buy clothing for just one euro. To promote the event, the committee created vibrant posters that generated buzz throughout the school.

On the 22nd of November, the event was a huge success, with many students showing support for sustainability. The committee also created a fun photo booth using leftover materials from Stand-Up Awareness Week, highlighting the school's creative spirit and commitment to the environment. How brilliant!

In conclusion, the clothes swap brought the school together for a great cause. Special thanks to Green School presidents, Tarawat Murwat and Katie Joubert, for their dedication and creativity. The event not only promoted sustainable fashion but also inspired students to make more mindful choices to combat climate change. It was a truly remarkable initiative.
