Presentation Secondary School Waterford

Senior Prefects 2023-2024

Senior Prefects

Presentation Waterford is especially proud of its successful prefect system. It provides students with the opportunity to involve themselves more thoroughly in the life of the school and develop their leadership potential. Prefects represent the school on formal occasions, and help out at important events such as 1st year assessment day, awards night and open night. They act as mentors for 1st year students and lead by example at all times. Prefects work to develop initiatives that raise school spirit. Prefects are essential to the smooth running of the school and work with the guidance of their Year Head and other members of staff.

Students who wish to apply for leadership positions as prefects, do so in January of 5th Year. Prefects are selected following a detailed selection process that consists of

  • Student vote
  • Teacher vote
  • Interview with Principal, Deputy Principal and Year Head

Head Girl and Deputy Girl are selected by staff vote in May each year.

As prefects the students work under the direction of their Year Head, Deputy Principal and Principal. Their roles are -

  • to lead by example at all times
  • to comply fully with the school dress code
  • to be courteous and supportive to school management and staff at all times
  • to attend all school functions as requested e.g. parent teacher meetings, awards night, information night for parents of incoming first years
  • to act as mentors to 1st year students as directed by their Year Head.
  • to make themselves available for the 1st Year assessment day to assist teachers and students.
  • to be present at the 1st Year induction day in August. They will assist staff as required, and will help to promote the various clubs and activities within the school
  • to use their initiative to organise activities during their year of office
  • to submit a written report of her activities as prefect to the Principal not later than 1st December. Failure to provide a satisfactory report will result in removal from the list of prefects

The school management reserves the right to remove a prefect from her position if she fails to perform satisfactorily as prefect, or for persistent or serious breaches of discipline.
