The Global Schools Project

On the week of the 16th to the 20th of January, eight of our TYs, Ruby Walsh, Tarawat Murwat, Nicole Erett, Tamara Sledzik, Lorena Lopez, Holly Power, Ellie Smith and Millie Power, took part in the Global Schools Project run by Sli (sustainable living initiative). This is a peer teaching project, that countless schools all over the country take part in. These students learn important and in-depth information about sustainability, and then go on to teach it to fellow students.

Our eight Presentation girls went to St. Patrick's gateway for the week, and got taught about sustainability; more specifically, transport sustainability. Throughout the week, they learned about the sustainable development goals (17 goals put in place by the UN, aimed to be achieved by 2030, that would make our world a better and more eco-friendly place), developed their own ideas on how to make our country a greener place in regards to transportation, and refined their public speaking skills. It was a brilliant learning environment, as well as a way to make new friends and socialize with people outside their school!

An ongoing project during the week was perfecting the workshops that were to be delivered to Waterford primary schools, and the first and second years of the participants' schools. The workshops are essentially the students teaching others exactly what they were taught! This is a brilliant way to spread awareness on the topic, informing as many young people as possible so they are aware of the climate change crisis from a young age, and will hopefully be inspired to make a difference.

Thanks so much to Jen Harris and Sarah Keane for the jam-packed week, it was an amazing experience for our students!
